There are nearly 170 colleges and universities across Turkey, and over 30,000 foreign students study in the country annually. Istanbul is Turkey’s largest city (and the fifth-largest in the world) and provides foreign students with numerous degree possibilities at one of over a dozen different universities. Many smaller cities also offer a number of study options for international students.

Enrollment at Turkey’s private universities currently accounts for only 5% of the total student population. Therefore, state universities are unquestionably the main agents of higher education in Turkey. In 2011, a total of 759,638 students were enrolled in an associate’s, bachelor’s, master's or doctorate program. 104 of these universities were state-owned, whereas 62 were either private or foundation universities.
